Thomas Eakins – America’s Master of Realism

Thomas Cowperthwait Eakins (1844-1916) was an American painter who is best known for his realistic depictions of the male body. Eakins’s quest for realism led him to study anatomy and apply his research to creating works with dark lighting and realistic depictions. He endured much public scorn in his early years for his obsession with the male figure, however was recognized as a great master towards the end of his life. Our pattern set includes a self portrait, several sculling and wrestling scenes. His most recognized works including The Swimming Hole, The Gross Clinic, Baby at Play, and The Agnew Clinic are also included. Hans Holbein the Younger – German Portraitist

Hans Holbein the Younger (1497 – 1543) was a German born painter who is considered one of the finest portraitists in the Early Modern Period. As a court painter for Henry VIII, Hans drew many portraits of both Henry VIII, and the extended royal family. He is also known for painting many richly colored religious works in the late Gothic style. Our large collection of Hans Holbein the Younger patterns includes several portraits of Henry VIII, as well as those of Erasmus, Jane Seymour, Boniface Amerbach, Thomas Chromwell, Christina of Denmark, Jan Small, Anne of Cleves, and Sir Thomas More. Henri Fantin-Latour – French Floral and Portrait Painter

Henri Fantin-Latour (1836-1904) was a French painter best known for his floral paintings and portraits. Although friends with several famous impressionist painters, Fantin-Latour remained a conservative and realistic artist throughout his life. The famous artist James McNeill Whistler brought attention to Fantin in England, where his still-lives sold so quite well. Ironically his works were virtually unknown in his native France. He married a fellow painter, Victoria Dubourg, and died of Lyme disease in 1875. Our set of Fantin-Latour contain many examples of his floral paintings in still life renderings of flowers, roses, and fruit. There are also numerous portraits including Marie-Yolande de Fitz James, Duchess Fitz James, Charlotte Dubourg, Two Sisters, Adolphe Jullien, Mr. and Mme Edwards, and several self-portraits.
