As a court painter to the Spanish King Philip IV in 17th century Spain, Diego Rodríguez de Silva y Velázquez (more commonly referred to as Diego Velázquez) was the leading Spanish artist of his time. His modern and realistic portraits of the royal family, European figures, as well as commoners, served as a major influence for many prominent painters in future years including Picasso, Dali, Bacon, and Manet.
