Masaccio – Early Renaissance Painter

Masaccio (1401-1428) was a painter of the early Italian Renaissance. He is considered the best painter of his time because of his skill at recreating lifelike figures and movements as well as a feeling of 3 dimensions. He profoundly influenced the art of painting in the renaissance and directed the art style away from Gothic art to a more humanistic world. He had a brief life span of only 26 years. One of his early works, San Giovenale Triptych shows signs of portraying a 3D effect by foreshortening of some forms and portrays volumetric figures. Another well known piece, The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, had an impact on other painters including Michelangelo. Our Masaccio pattern set collection contains much of his works including Young Man, The Tribute Money, The Expulsion from the Garden of Eden, Stories of St. Julian and St. Nichols, Adoration of Magi, Crocifissione Napoli, The Madonna and Child with St. Anne, San Giovenale Triptych, St. Peter Healing the Sick with his Shadow, and Raising of the Son of Theophilus and St. Peter Enthroned. Windmills

Windmills are structures that convert wind power into rotational energy. This energy is applied to grind grain, pump water, or generate electricity. Windmills are generally oriented vertically, but through history some horizontal designed windmills are documented. The vanes of the windmill are called sails or blades and are covered with a satin cloth or wooden shutters. Most windmills have four sails, but designs with as many as eight sails can be found. In the Netherlands the positions of the sails in non-working windmills, can signal joy or mourning. Our Windmill pattern set contains designs created from photographs of windmills in various environments including clear and cloudy skies, grassy fields, along water ways and roads, and with sunrises in the background.

George Romney – English Portrait Painter

George Romney (1734-1802) was an English portrait painter who painted many society figures of his day. Many of his paintings featured his muse, Emma Hamilton, in various poses depicting historical and mythological figures. One of his early paintings, The Death of General Wolfe-Study, was entered into a Royal Society of Arts competition, but was questioned for being too contemporary. This caused Romney to ignore the Society for the rest of career, despite being asked to exhibit there after he became successful. Our pattern collection for George Romney contains many of his well known portraits including John Forbes, Major General Sir Archibald Campbell, Elizabeth Dutches-Contess of Sutherland, Charles Lennox, Miss Kirkpatrick, Miss Juliann Willoughby, Sir Christopher and Lady Sykes, Mrs Anne Carwardine and Her Eldest Son, Mrs Henrietta Morris and her Son, and John Walter Tempest with a Horse. There are many patterns with Emma Lady Hamilton, and also a self portrait.
