Jan Steen – Dutch Genre Painter

Jan Steen (c. 1626 – 1679) was a Dutch genre painter of the Dutch Golden Age. His paintings of Dutch family life, celebrations, and outdoor scenes are both lively and humorous. He also painted numerous portraits, religious, and historical scenes. In 1672 when the art market collapsed, Jan opened a tavern. Our pattern set includes many of his most recognized pieces including Self Portrait, The Merry Family, The Sick Woman, The Doctor’s Visit, The Dancing Couple, The Feast of St. Nicholas, The World Upside Down, The Lovesick Woman, and The Picnic.

Jan van Eyck – Renaissance Realist

Jan van Eyck (c. 1395 – 1441) was a Flemish painter considered to be one of the best Northern European painters of the 15th century. Because of his effective use of glazes, wet-on-wet, and other techniques, he was known as the father of oil painting. For much of his life he served as a painter and valet de chambre to Duke Philip the Good of Burgundy. Jan van Eyck produced paintings for both private clients as well as for the court. Among his most famous works is the Ghent Altarpiece, a polyptych containing many works included in our pattern set. Other paintings included are Arnolfini Portrait, Annunciation, the Stygmata of St. Francis, Portrait of a Goldsmith, Portrait of a Young Man, Portrait of a Man in a Turban, Portrait of a Man with Carnation, Portrait of Margareta van Eyck, and Portrait of Jan de Leeuw.

Jean-François Millet – The Peasant Painter

Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) was a French painter best known for his depictions of peasant farmers. His works are considered part of the naturalism and realism movements. He was one of the founders of the Barbizon school whose artists focused more on creating realistic works of art, rather than the more popular romantic style of the day. The French landscape was a popular them of the Barbizon school. Many of Millet’s works involve field workers, but he also created a number of portraits and interior scenes. Our collection of patterns includes most of his most recognized works including The Angelus, The Potato Harvest, The Gleaners, The Sheepfold, Woman Baking Bread, Haystacks, The Man with a Hoe, and The Sower.

Joaquín Sorolla – Valencian Spanish Painter

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) was a Spanish Painter from Valencia who excelled in painting portraits, landscapes, and social themes. One of his paintings, Sad Inheritance depicted crippled children bathing at the sea and earned Joaquín great recognition. He expertly depicted shimmering light and other lighting effects in his paintings. Other notable paintings included the Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the microscope and research which linked art and science. Although not as creative as other genres, Sorolla painted a large number of portraits which was a profitable endeavor in that era. Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675) was a relatively unknown Dutch painter who became truly discovered many years after his death. John Constable (1776-1837) was an English Romantic painter who was best known for his landscape paintings, which vividly showed the sky and clouds as never before. His use of sketches and note taking to plan and record his work was also novel for the time.
