Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) was a Spanish Painter from Valencia who excelled in painting portraits, landscapes, and social themes. One of his paintings, Sad Inheritance depicted crippled children bathing at the sea and earned Joaquín great recognition. He expertly depicted shimmering light and other lighting effects in his paintings. Other notable paintings included the Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the microscope and research which linked art and science. Although not as creative as other genres, Sorolla painted a large number of portraits which was a profitable endeavor in that era. Our pattern set for Joaquín Sorolla includes a broad set of paintings including Children on the Seashore, Sad Inheritance, Another Marguerite, Portrait of Mr. Taft, Portrait of Lawyer Don Silverio de la Torre y Agua, Valenican Fishergirl, Castle of La Mota Medina del Camp, The Virgin Mary, Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the Microscope, and Beach at Valencia.

Thomas Cole (1801-1848) was an American artist who is regarded as the Founder of the Hudson River School. This school represented an art movement that emphasized realistic and detailed portraits of the American landscape with themes of romanticism and naturalism. Thomas Cole was born in England, but moved to the United States as a youth. His talents for painting were soon discovered and his works focused on landscapes. He also painted allegorical works including his famous “”The Course of Empire”” serie

Benozzo Gozzoli (c. 1421 – 1497) was an Italian Renaissance painter. Although his art doesn’t rival his contemporaries in terms of elevation or strength, his works are attractive because of the rich, lively, and abundant aspects of subjects and objects. In his many frescos, he used bright, vivacious and festive colors. He is best known for a series of detailed murals in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi depicting festive, vibrant processions. These include the frescos of the Magi in the Magi Chapel, the Journey of the Magi to Bethlehem and a composition of Angels in Paradise. He included a self portrait in the procession. Our pattern set for Benozzo Gozzoli contains many of his recognized works, both in their entirety and also details. The set includes a self portrait, John VIII Palaeologus, several Madonna and Child paintings, Saint Fortunatus Enthroned, Processor of the Magus Balthaza, Follower of the Old King, Lorenzo De’ Medici, The Contemplation of Angels, The Evangelists Luke and John, and the Vision of St. Dominic.

Cimabue (c. 1240 – 1302) also known as Bencivieni di Pepo was a Florentine Painter and a creator of mosaics. He was a pioneer in transforming the prevailing art style from a flat and stylized form into one that was more natural with subtle effects such as shading and realistic proportions. His most documented works include a Crucifix in the Basilica di Santa Croce, Maestà in San Francesco at Pisa, and Madonna with Child Enthroned, Four Angels and St. Francis at Assisi. Our pattern set includes these works with some details made into individual patterns and others paintings including The Madonna in Majesty, The Capture of Christ, The Flagellation of Christ, and Madonna di Castelfiorentino.

Jan Gossaert (c. 1478 – 1532), also known as Jan Mabuse, was a Flemish painter best known for introducing Italian art styles to the Netherlands. He was a notable portrait artist and worked for Philip of Burgundy. An early trip to Italy had great influence on his work and he adopted ideas from classical art, ornate and Romanist styles in his later works. He is best known for statuesque nudes, numerous Madonna and Child renditions, and many portraits which are particularly notable for their expressive depiction of hands. Our pattern set collection contains many of his works including Danae, Hercules and Deianira, Lady Portrayed As Mary Magdalene, Adam and Eve, Man with a Rosary, Madonna and Child, Neptune and Amphitrite, Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon, and a self portrait.

Gustav Klimt (1862-1918) was an Austrian symbolist painter best known for his paintings of the female body. The son of an engraver, Gustav attended the Vienna School of Arts and Crafts studying architectural painting and soon after started his career painting interior murals and ceilings. He came a founding member and president of the Vienna Secession, a group credited for bringing French Impressionists to the Viennese public. Klimt’s paintings contained radical themes and were considering disturbing. He transformed traditional allegory and symbolism into a new sexual language. During this time he meet Emilie Louise Flöge, who appeared in several of his works. After the Vienna secession years, Gustav’s works are categorized as his Golden phase, where he used gold leaf as a predominant design element.
