Franz Marc – German Expressionist Painter

Franz Marc (1880 – 1916) was a German Impressionist Painter who was a founding member of the Der Blaue Reiter. This journal included group of artists who formed an expressionism movement in Germany. Most of work involves animals in natural settings as a subject matter, and is characterized by bright primary colors in a cubist style. His works show a strong sense of emotion. His use of color forms a predictable pattern: the color blue was used to portray masculinity and spirituality, yellow was used to represent feminine joy, and red was used to indicate the sound of violence. In his later years, during World War 1, Marc enlisted in the German army and was involved with military camouflage. Joshua Reynolds – English Portrait Painter

Sir Joshua Reynolds (1723-1792) was an eighteen century English painter who specialized in portraits. He was one of the founders of the Royal Academy of Arts in London which promotes arts through education and exhibition. He is best known for his numerous portraits, particularly those of children where their innocence and natural grace was emphasized. Reynolds was a hard worker who never married, and had constant interaction from the wealthy and famous men of the day. Berthe Morisot – Female Impressionist

She had a close acquaintance with Édouard Manet, another well-known impressionist painter, and married his brother, Eugene. Their daughter, Julie, became the subject of many of Berthe’s paintings. Probably because she was female, her work was undervalued for over a century. She is now considered among the most elite of the impressionists.
