Jean Désiré Gustave Courbet (1819 – 1877) was a French painter who led the Realist movement which bridged the Romantic and Impressionist movements.
Courbet boldly addressed controversial subjects in his time including the depiction of peasant life, the working conditions of the poor, and various sexual topics. He was a painter of figurative compositions, landscapes, seascapes, and still-lifes. Our collection of Courbet patterns includes his most important ones including The Desperate Man, A Burial at Ornans, The Artist’s Studio, The Stone Breakers, Wounded Man, The Wrestlers, Self Portrait with a Black Dog, and The Peasants of Flagey Returning from the Fair.

Jean-François Millet (1814-1875) was a French painter best known for his depictions of peasant farmers. His works are considered part of the naturalism and realism movements. He was one of the founders of the Barbizon school whose artists focused more on creating realistic works of art, rather than the more popular romantic style of the day. The French landscape was a popular them of the Barbizon school. Many of Millet’s works involve field workers, but he also created a number of portraits and interior scenes. Our collection of patterns includes most of his most recognized works including The Angelus, The Potato Harvest, The Gleaners, The Sheepfold, Woman Baking Bread, Haystacks, The Man with a Hoe, and The Sower.

Thomas Moran (1837 – 1926) was an American painter of the Hudson River School best known for his paintings of the Rocky Mountains. His sketches of western landscape captured the imagination of the American public and helped make Yellowstone a US national park. Our pattern collection for Thomas Moran contains many of his most famous works including The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone, Tower Fall, Green River, The Three Tetons, Mosquito Trail, Shoshone Falls, Trojes Mines, An Arizona Sunset, Pass at Glencoe, and the Mountain of the Holy Cross.

Tiziano Vecelli (c. 1485 – 1576) , better known as Titian, was a great 16th century painter who major works included portraits, religious paintings, mythological scenes, and nudes. He is best known for his development of modern portraiture, and his extraordinary use of color. Many consider Titian to be the founder of modern painting because of his influence on other masters that he inspired (El Greco, Rubens, Rembrandt, and Picasso). Though his favorite color was red, his palette was large, and Titian applied color in very novel ways. Our collection includes many of his most well known portraits including Pope Paul, Ariosto, Isabella d’Este, Laura de’Dianti, Doge Andrea Gritti, Lavinia (his daughter), King Phillip II, Charles V, Eleonora Gonzaga Delle Rovere, Empress Isabel of Portugal, Ranuccio Farnese, and Federigo II, Gonzaga. There are also 2 self-portraits, and many mythological scenes including Bacchus, Venus, and Adonis.

Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) was a French Impressionist painter who painted scenes of urban and rural landscapes. He frequently used peasants and laborers as subject matters in his works. He is considered the father of impressionism mostly because of his mentoring relationships with Cézanne, Gauguin, Degas, and other impressionist artists of the times. Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875) was a French Landscape painter who had a strong influence on Impressionism. Corot was the leading painter of the Barbizon school of France in the mid-nineteenth century and his landscape style referenced a neo-classical style with a muted color palette. Many forgeries of Corot were created in the period 1870-1939, mostly because of his easy to imitate style. Our pattern set includes many examples of landscapes and portraits.
