Jules Tavernier – Hawaii’s Volcano School Artist

Jules Tavernier (1844-1889) was a French painter and was an artist of Hawaii’s Volcano School., a group of non-Hawaiian artists who painted nocturnal scenes of Hawaii’s erupting Volcanoes. Taverier also painted landscapes in the San Francisco and Monterey areas. His work was so popular in Hawaii that he became the official painter to the king. William Glackens – American Realist Painter

William Glackens ((1870 – 1938) was an American Realist Painter and one of the founders of the Ashcan School of American Art which focused on portraying scenes of daily middle class life in New York. The works from this group were robust, urban themes done with energetic painting styles. Glackens later developed his own coloristic style which many compared to Renoir. His subject matters varied constantly through his life with portraits, landscapes, and still lifes. Benozzo Gozzoli – Italian Renaissance Painter

Benozzo Gozzoli (c. 1421 – 1497) was an Italian Renaissance painter. Although his art doesn’t rival his contemporaries in terms of elevation or strength, his works are attractive because of the rich, lively, and abundant aspects of subjects and objects. In his many frescos, he used bright, vivacious and festive colors. He is best known for a series of detailed murals in the Palazzo Medici-Riccardi depicting festive, vibrant processions. These include the frescos of the Magi in the Magi Chapel, the Journey of the Magi to Bethlehem and a composition of Angels in Paradise. He included a self portrait in the procession. Our pattern set for Benozzo Gozzoli contains many of his recognized works, both in their entirety and also details. Rachel Ruysch – Dutch Flower Painter

Rachel Ruysch (1664 -1750) was a Dutch still life painter best known for her artwork involving flowers. She was undoubtedly inspired by her father, a very famous botanist of the era. She had a long career of painting starting at age 15 and continuing producing excellent works well into her 80s. The backgrounds of her paintings were very dark, which was the style for flower paintings at the time. Later in her life, she was influenced by another painter who painted lighter backgrounds, and she too adapted that style. You’ll find many examples of her works in our pattern set, with flowers in bouquets, vases, and with various props including a butterfly, fruits, tree trunks, tulips, insects, and bees.

Joseph Blackburn (1700-?-1778?) was a portrait painter born in England who worked in Bermuda and Colonial America. His skills as a painter are shown by his treatments of textiles including silks, laces, and fabric folds. In this pattern set we’ve included most of his most renown paintings including High Jones, Colonel Theodore Atkinson, Mary Leh, Captain John Pigett, Samuel Cutts, Elizabeth Browne Rogers, Ann Saltonstall, and Abigail Chesebrough.

Gustave Moreau – French Symbolist Painter

Gustave Moreau (1826 – 1898) was a French Symbolist painter who focused on biblical and mythological themes. Symbolists believed that art should represent absolute truths that could only be described and depicted indirectly. Moreau painted over 8000 works in his career. He was a teacher at the Paris’ École des Beaux-Arts late in his life. To some Gustave was regarded as a precursor to Surrealism.
