Joaquín Sorolla – Valencian Spanish Painter

Joaquín Sorolla y Bastida (1863-1923) was a Spanish Painter from Valencia who excelled in painting portraits, landscapes, and social themes. One of his paintings, Sad Inheritance depicted crippled children bathing at the sea and earned Joaquín great recognition. He expertly depicted shimmering light and other lighting effects in his paintings. Other notable paintings included the Portrait of Dr. Simarro at the microscope and research which linked art and science. Although not as creative as other genres, Sorolla painted a large number of portraits which was a profitable endeavor in that era. Jan Gossaert – Flemish Painter

Jan Gossaert (c. 1478 – 1532), also known as Jan Mabuse, was a Flemish painter best known for introducing Italian art styles to the Netherlands. He was a notable portrait artist and worked for Philip of Burgundy. An early trip to Italy had great influence on his work and he adopted ideas from classical art, ornate and Romanist styles in his later works. He is best known for statuesque nudes, numerous Madonna and Child renditions, and many portraits which are particularly notable for their expressive depiction of hands. Our pattern set collection contains many of his works including Danae, Hercules and Deianira, Lady Portrayed As Mary Magdalene, Adam and Eve, Man with a Rosary, Madonna and Child, Neptune and Amphitrite, Mary Tudor and Charles Brandon, and a self portrait.

Benjamin West – Anglo-American Painter

Benjamin West (1738 – 1820) was a Anglo-American Painter who created many historical scenes. He was born in Pennsylvania and learned how to make paint from Native Americans. He originally painted portraits and later became associated with a wealthy patron who connected him to other painters from which he learned advanced skills such as painting silk and satin. His travels to Italy exposed him to works from Titian and Raphael who influenced his later works. He later traveled to England from where he never returned home. His career involved commissions from the King of England and he helped establish a Royal Academy. Alfred Stevens – Belgian Painter

Alfred Stevens (1823 – 1906) was a Belgian painter was the son of an art collector. He developed a conventional naturalistic style influenced by 17th century Dutch genre painting. He also studied works by painters such as Gerard ter Borch and Gabriel Metsu. He influenced social attitudes towards the poor with a work titled What is called Vagrancy. Many of his works use elegant modern woman as subjects. He also painted several works using a fashionable taste called japonisme which Stevens was an early enthusiast.
